MEDIA RELEASE - Tuesday 2nd September 2014
Animal Liberation Queensland [ALQ] is extremely disappointed that Bendigo Bank sponsored the Ipswich Greyhound Puppy Auction last Sunday 24 August at Ipswich Showgrounds.
Whilst, on the one hand, the Bendigo Bank commendably supports homeless animal adoption, it is showing quite inconsistent ethics in its support of the greyhound racing industry which is directly responsible for the overbreeding and the subsequent “wastage” of some 17,000 dogs each year in Australia.
The Queensland government has allocated $12 million to a new greyhound track at Cronulla Park, Logan, south of Brisbane, and the Racing Minister also announced an annual $1.2 million investment in appearance fees to reward trainers who race greyhounds in Queensland.
Greyhounds are gentle dogs who would usually prefer to have a snooze on the couch if given the choice between exercising or sleeping. Sadly, these dogs are primarily regarded as a commercial resource and so when they race, too often they are running for their lives. If not up to speed – literally – these gentle animals very often pay the ultimate price.
