- Greater oversight of rodeos by Qld's Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) including mandatory attendance by DAF officers
- Total prohibition on 'jiggers' (small hand-held electric prod devices which are easily concealed) at rodeos
- Ban on regular electric prods in the immediate vicinity of rodeo chutes
- Compulsory vet attendance
Dear Minister Furner,
For far too long, your government has failed to sufficiently protect animals at Queensland rodeos through lack of oversight by the department and lack of prosecution for clear breaches of your weak 'Code'.
Not only does your government fail to adequately protect animals at rodeos, but you also provide funding for rodeos such as the Mount Isa Rodeo - where there is video evidence of significant animal mistreatment and suffering, and where some animals have even lost their lives in the arena.
It's time for some immediate and meaningful changes.
We, the undersigned, demand the following:
- Greater oversight of rodeos by Qld's Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) including mandatory attendance by DAF officers
- Total prohibition on 'jiggers' (small hand-held electric prod devices which are easily concealed) at rodeos
- Ban on regular electric prods in the immediate vicinity of rodeo chutes
- Compulsory vet attendance
We also call on the Queensland Government to stop its funding of rodeos which are opposed by all animal rights/ animal welfare organisations throughout Australia. The state government should only fund regional tourism events which do not cause physical or psychological harm to animals.
