Grace Grace: Urgently suspend racing at dangerous Ipswich track

Five dogs have been killed at the Ipswich Showgrounds track this year. Three of those deaths were in just four days 20-23 March 2022:

On Sunday 20 March, Special Bill was euthanised after suffering a broken leg. He was 3.5years old.
On Monday 21 March, Tiger Shian was euthanised after suffering a 'serious leg injury'. He was only 1 year and 10months old.
On Wednesday 23 March, Midnight Blue was euthanised after suffering a broken leg. He was 2.5 years old.

This follows the death of 'Final Assassin' on 8 March 2022, and most recently 'Catch Them Cutie' on 17 April 2022.

Greyhound racing should be immediately suspended at this track while a thorough investigation is undertaken.

Dear Minister Grace,

I am writing to you with extreme concern over the huge spike in deaths at the Ipswich Greyhound Racing Club. Five dogs have now been killed since 8 March at the Ipswich track.

Three dogs have been killed at the Ipswich Showgrounds track in just four days 20-23 March:

- On Sunday 20th March, Special Bill was euthanised after suffering a broken leg. He was 3.5years old.

- On Monday 21st March, Tiger Shian was euthanised after suffering a 'serious leg injury'. He was only 1 year and 10months old.

- On Wednesday 23rd March, Midnight Blue was euthanised after suffering a broken leg. He was 2.5 years old.

Final Assassin was killed on 8 March 2022. And most recently, Catch Them Cutie was killed following a near side fore leg catastrophic injury on 17 April 2022.

All of these dogs were very young, and I would like to know why they weren’t given the opportunity to be treated, rehabilitated and rehomed.

A further 59 dogs have been stood down as a result of injury during races at the track in March alone. The number of injuries at this track for 2022 is in excess of 139.

These numbers do not include any injuries or deaths as a result of trials as there is no public information available on these numbers. But it is likely that the real number of injuries sustained by greyhounds at this track is much higher.

It is clear that this track is too dangerous to keep dogs racing, and I am calling on you, as the Racing Minister, to immediately and urgently suspend all racing and trials at the Ipswich Showgrounds track until a full investigation into the safety at the track can be conducted.

If the  Palaszczuk government is serious about racing welfare, then you will take swift and immediate action to protect any more greyhounds from being killed and injured at this unsafe facility.
